The Kitchen Remodel (Austin House)

We decided that the Kitchen of our house in Austin was in desperate need of an upgrade.  Plus, we wanted to increase the value of the house for later resale.  We've always heard that Kitchens and Bathrooms are the best upgrades you can do.  I wish I would have been more diligent about taking photos.  There are some steps where we were so focused, I forgot to take photos.  These are in chronological order.  We have since sold this house and moved to Florida.  We were right, this greatly enhanced the sale of the home.

So...  Take a look at our work and enjoy.

Kitchen 1 (before)

Sink - Gray Tile with Pink Grout - Gray counters

Kitchen 2 (before)

Cabinets - Fridge - Exploratory hole

Dining Room (before)

Same ugly grout - notice popcorn ceiling

Begin lighting

Holes and wiring for lighting is installed.

More lighting

more holes and wiring for lighting.

The big pain

More lighting install, ran into a snag - notice big opening near outside wall.

Just one more thing!

This vent carries air from the attic of the 2nd story down to the 2 vents in the kitchen area. One of the pot lights goes right where the red X is marked on this vent.

What to do...

These metal stips art supporting the entire weight of the plenum box. Remove them and it falls. Must modify this to allow space for light fixture.

After the fix

Modified the plenum (finding the fiber board was a PAIN). reshaped it and moved the vent pipes around to allow space for the lighting. The new board (see writing) keeps the plenum supported, so no need for the old metal strips.

More ceiling removed

This was necessary to reroute the duct work.

Beadboard ceiling begins

LATE, LATE, LATE - Began the new ceiling

Cabinet Parts

This is a small sample of parts for a few of the cabinets. Totals: 18 cabinets made up of 126 parts. Lots of gluing and clamping. Building them took about 2 months to complete.

Our first!!!

This was the first cabinet. We started with the smallest to make sure we calculated everything correctly. Isn't it beautiful?

Begin cabinet install

Several months later - We began installing the new cabinets.

Cabinets installed

Cabinets installed. Notice the space above them to allow for crown molding. You'll see that in later pictures.

Cabinets complete

Cabinets complete

Notice the choice in cabinet here. The old corner style made the kitchen look smaller, so this slimmer version looks better.

Cabinet doors

Now this was a job!!! There are about 65 door panels (for upper and lower). That's 325 individual pieces that had to be cut, routed, glued and painted. Another many month process. But - Don't they look great?!!!

Cabinets installed another view

Additional cabinet over counter surface. Will have hand made stained glass doors and lighting for featuring pieces.

Our new DishWasher

Ain't it pretty!!!

New Microwave

New microwave over the stove. This was planned to save counter space. There's so little in this kitchen.

Cabinet finished

Cabinet with new stained glass doors (yes, Mikey made the stained glass too...)

Cabinet finished

The other side...

Another cabinet view

This is a little later after the tile was installed on the counters and backsplash

Cabinet details

Ths shows the end panels on the cabinets and the crown molding.

New pantry closed

This looks deceptively just like the old one...

New pantry opened.

Looks can be deceiving - The whole thing slides out for better access. Very cool!

Next ...  The rest of the downstairs
